This was a pleasant surprise, a secret gem. Usually when we watch a new movie, we’ll give it 15 minutes and if it’s no good, we can bail after fifteen minutes, no guilt. You can usually tell if a movie’s any good after 15 minutes. The first shot of Perdita Durango was a full body nude scene with Rosie Perez. We’re in! And tt just goes nuts from there. This is the kind of movie Quentin Tarantino wishes he could make.
Rosie Perez and Javiar Bardem play very bad people who do very bad things. Rosie Perez’s character is also in the movie Wild at Heart, played by Issabella Rossilini. What makes Perdito so good is the couple’s sheer embrace of their evil ways. They are living life to the fullest at its most amoral. With James Gandolfini and, a personal favorite, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in the cast, there’s no flaw in casting. Plus the intensity of Bardem and Perez’s relationship, they’re often staring down the other while committing atrocities and during sex, is riveting.
The most surprising aspect to me is that we’ve never heard of this one before. Thanks to the boutique movie service KinoCult for acquiring this lesser-known 90’s cult flick.
Check it out.
